REASON FOR TREATMENT
An 18 years old female patient from China, Miss Yan was diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes 5 years before undergoing treatment in Beijing Puhua International Hospital.
Miss Yan was presented with such diabetic symptoms as feeling of thirst, increased appetite, frequent urination and weight loss.
She began insulin treatment at a local hospital and had experienced an episode of ketoacidosis once, for which she has been hospitalized.
Although Miss Yan was receiving treatment and her blood sugar levels were kept under control, her general condition remained poor.
Miss Yan'referred to our hospital on the recommendation of her friend and our past patient Miss Chen, who is also suffering from type 1 Diabetes. Following this recommendation, Miss Yan and her mother have decided to try stem cell treatment in order to improve Miss Yan's condition.
CONDITION BEFORE TREATMENT
Prior to stem cell treatment, Miss Yan's blood glucose levels were relatively stable, with fasting plasma blood glucose controlled at a level of 6.7-9.4mmol/L and postprandial blood glucose at a level of 6.2-9.4mmol/L. Her glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1C) was high, at 11.6, which means that her blood sugar levels were not under control.
In order to control her blood glucose level, Miss Yan usually used 26 Units of insulin per day.
Upon admission, Miss Yan's eyes were swollen (especially her upper eyelids) and edema was noted in both legs.
Miss Yan has complained of an unstable emotional status. She constantly felt fatigued. An ultrasound examination revealed an abdominal edema.
METHOD OF TREATMENT
Stem cell implantations, Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture.
CONDITION AFTER TREATMENT
While receiving stem cell treatment, Miss Yan's condition began gradually improving.
Her fasting plasma glucose was now closer to normal with the level of 5.0-6.4mmol/L. Her postprandial blood glucose was almost within normal limits of 5.3-7.2mmol/L.
According to Miss Yan, before the treatment she had no desire to perform any activity and she always felt tired. However, after stem cell treatment, she had much more energy.
Miss Yan's eyes were not swollen anymore, and her feet did not exhibit edema. With the better-controlled blood glucose levels, Miss Yan was now able to reduce her insulin intake dosage daily. At discharge she used only 18 Units of insulin in total per day, while keeping blood glucose near normal levels.
Miss Yan looked good in general, and her appetite has improved.
Follow up
After discharge, Miss Yan kept us updated on her condition. Her blood glucose levels were controlled well and she continued reducing her insulin intake.
Per follow up conversation 15 days after Miss Yan's discharge, she was now using only 8 units of insulin per day.
Miss Yan and her mother were very pleased with the effects of stem cell treatment.
In October 2010, Miss Yan's visited our hospital once again. According to her blood glucose test she was recommended to stop regular insulin intake and to continue administering 4 Units of insulin glargine before sleep. Her blood glucose levels were under control. Her fasting plasma glucose is almost normal with the level of 5.0-6.2mmol/L (reference value: 3.9-6.1mmol/L). Her postprandial blood glucose is at a level of 5.2-6.6mmol/L (reference value: <8.0mmol/L).
On 26th November 2010, two months after stem cell treatment for type 1 Diabetes, Miss Yan told us that she had stopped insulin injections completely while her blood sugar levels were well under control without it.
