BEGINNING OF TREATMENT: December 2nd 2009
TREATMENT: 4 stem cell injections via lumbar puncture + nutritious stem cell cocktail treatment (intravenous).
CONDITION BEFORE THE TREATMENT: See Videos: interview before.wmv Trained as a nurse, only four years ago, Cissy was a very active woman, who took up travelling with her husband on a regular basis, and walking on the beaches of Sydney. This has all changed in 2006, when she felt an excruciating pain in her left shoulder but did not think much of it, assuming it was due to carrying a heavy bag during her recent trip. When later on the pain intensified and made her left hand stiff and weak, she went to her family doctor, who thought it was a virus and prescribed a series of antibiotics.
The antibiotics did not help and the stiffness and pain worsened which made her undergo a series of extensive tests in several facilities, leading to a Parkinsons disease diagnosis.
Upon returning from a 4 weeks trip to Alaska in July 2007, Cissy became ill and had to be hospitalized. At that time she was extremely weak, could not walk without support and was experiencing problems with her balance. At this time she was diagnosed as suffering from Corticobasal degeneration (CBD). The disease has progressed at a very fast pace, causing Cissy to become entirely dependant on caregivers. She was now immobilized. She is unable to feed herself, shower, getting in and out of bed and turn over in bed without assistance. She also couldn't communicate clearly and her voice was barely above a whisper. Accompanied by her husband, Cissy came to China hoping the treatment at Beijing Tiantan Puhua hospital will prolong her life and better its quality.
AFTER THE TREATMENT: See Videos: interview after.wmv
Upon arriving to Beijing Tiantan Puhua hospital in order to undergo stem cells treatment, during the first two weeks into treatment, Cissy steadily got better but at some point experienced a relapse in her condition. Cissys treatment had to be adjusted to suit her fluctuating situation. Cissy continued undergoing her daily treatments, however in order to preserve her powers, she spent the last 3 weeks undergoing treatment in the comfort of her suite.
In general, the treatment resulted in a slight improvement in her condition. Cissy can now call out to her husband, Larry, from the bathroom, she is able to move her hands more. Cissy now does not feel short of breath as much as she had prior to stem cells treatment, and both Cissy and Larry feel that the Chinese herbal medicine she has received in the hospital made a real difference to the congestion in her chest.
Before leaving Beijing, the couple was optimistic, hoping for more progress in the next few moths.
