following their struggle to get stem cell treatment in China for 5 year old Hailey. She and her younger brother have a rare condition called Batten's disease. After getting to a layover in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Monday, the airlines refused to let the Goranflo's complete the trip. They were forced to come back to Louisville, but WAVE 3's Lindsay English reports now it looks like they are packing up again.
Sitting on the front porch of her Shepherdsville home is not where Miranda Goranflo expected to be Sunday night.
"The doctor's in Canada would not give us a medical waiver and that is a crucial piece to making this trip," she said.
Miranda thought she'd already be halfway around the world in China with her five year old daughter, Hailey.
"Hailey is only going to be the fifth child with Batten's Disease to be treated there in Beijing. And three out of the four that have been treated are doing better. It's nothing miraculous but the children are stronger. It can help reduce the seizures," says Goranflo.
But after six days of pleading and fighting for permission to continue on their journey to get that treatment, Hailey and Miranda were flown back to Louisville.
"As soon as we got her home and she sees a neurologist that has seen her a few times, he knew Hailey and her condition and he gave us the waiver that she is fit to fly. That's a big piece of it that's taken care of," Goranflo says.
WAVE 3 brought their struggle to the attention of Congressman John Yarmuth's office. His staff was able to help other logistics of the second trip finally come together.
"You have to do what you can. She's not even in my district but she came to us for help and we tried to do everything we could for her. And my staff has done a wonderful job. Their hearts went out to her and they've been meeting with the family and talking with them consistently," says Rep. Yarmuth.
Miranda says she hopes this time they'll make it to China for the treatment and hopefully all the heartaches and headaches will be worth it.
"Hailey hasn't smiled in weeks. If we could just see that smile again that would be enough for me," she says.
Miranda and Hailey are expected to fly out on a United Airlines direct flight to Beijing from Chicago on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the couple continues to make plans to take their 3 year old son Carter to China in August for similar stem cell treatment. He also suffers from Batten's Disease.
